Gottleib Stagier was born in Germany in 1841. His family relocated to Philadelphia , PA to start a new life. In 1861 when the Confederacy fired upon Ft. Sumner, Gottleib signed up to fight for the Union. On August 2nd 1861 he was mustered into the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers Company C as a private.On June 1st 1864 he was promoted to Corporal and served until his muster out on September 8th 1861.

After the war he went to work in a Saloon in Philadelphia and became a member of The 23rd Pennsylvania Survivors Association. On July 7th 1890 he filed for his military pension. In 1903 he became one of the twelve board members of the Survivors Association of the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. He died on December 12th 1924 and was buried at Knights of Pythias Greenwood Cemetery (930 Adams Ave., Phila., PA 19124.215-533-2967.) in Philadelphia. He is buried in Section J Division 2 Lot 113.
