Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1835 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served during the Civil War first as Major of the 2nd United States Regular Cavalry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st United States Regular Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Reglar Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He retired with the rank of Colonel in 1870.
