Dr. Gerald A. Zerdy, 69, of Washington, D.C., died Jan. 15 at home.

Born in Pottsville, June 16, 1942, he was a son of the late Dr. Alphonse and Mary A. Zerdy.

Dr. Zerdy had a bachelor's degree in psychology from Penn State University, a master's degree in psychology from the University of Maryland and received his doctorate in industrial and quantitative psychology from the University of Maryland in 1971. While there, he conducted research in the areas of human memory and information processing and computer-assisted instruction.

He was a research psychologist in the Environmental Design Research Division Center for Building Technology at the National Bureau of Standards. He had been investigating human aversion to sound at National Bureau of Standards since 1971.

He had been a co-investigator on environmental noise research at the Coast Guard, Consumer Product Safety Commission, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and Federal Highway Administration. In addition, he had conducted basic research on the aversive properties of sound. Dr. Zerdy had also designed and implemented software for the control and analysis of experiments for the psycho acoustics laboratory in the Sound Building at NBS. Since being transferred to the Center for Building Technology in March 1979, Dr. Zerdy had been involved in research designed to improve noise criteria and test methods used to assess the acoustic environment in and around buildings. He was co-author of many publications that can be accessed by Googling his name.

He was a program manager for Statutory, Department of Commerce, and Statutory Import Program staff.
