Fred H. Zahn was born on June 11, 1916 to Fred H. Zahn and Pauline Zahn in Jerome, Idaho. He died on December 14, 2006 at his home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Fred Zahn was a civic leader in Oklahoma City. He retired from the C.R. Anthony Company where he was Vice-President. He had worked his way up through the ranks of that company from a merchandise buyer, traffic and leasing officer, real estate manager, corporate secretary and corporate assistant treasurer.

He moved with his family from Idaho to Oklahoma City, where his father, Fred H. Zahn, Sr. assisted Mr. C. R. Anthony in the building of a chain of clothing retail stores. He was named Boss of the Year in 1975 by the Oklahoma City Chapters of the National Secretaries Association.

Mr. Zahn graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City. He received an academic scholarship to Yale University where he majored in Science and Engineering. Graduating at the top of the Yale Class of 1938, Mr. Zahn was also president of the Yale Student Council. At Yale, he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the Tau Beta Phi Honorary Engineering Society, and the Sigma Xi Honorary Scientific Society. He was admitted for study at Yale University Law School in the fall of 1938, but the death of his father and family matters brought him back to Oklahoma before he could complete his studies.

Fred Zahn served on numerous boards in the Oklahoma City area including past chairman of the American Cancer Society, Oklahoma Chapters; Board member of the Oklahoma County Mental Health Association; Director and Past President of Oklahoma City Beautiful; Member, Presbyterian Hospital Board; Member, Lyric Theater Board; Board Member, World Neighbors; Board Members, Phillips University; Board Member, Alina Lodge of Blairstown, New Jersey; Board Member, American National Bank of Midwest City; Board Member of the YMCA, Board Member, Community Bank of Oklahoma City; Past President of the Kiwanis Club; Past President of the Young Men's Dinner Club, Member of the Oklahoma Heritage Association, founding Member of the Economic Club, Member of the Fortune Club, Chairman, Westminster School Building Campaign; Secretary of the Presbyterian Health Foundation, and Member of the Board, Dean A. McGee Eye Institute of Oklahoma City.

He was an active supporter of the Oklahoma City Arts Council, the Lyric Theater, Oklahoma City University, the YMCA and YWCA, the Allied Arts, the Oklahoma Zoological Society and the Omniplex. Mr. Zahn was active in church life. He served as an Elder at the Crown Heights Christian Church. He was later a member of the Board of Trustees at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was active in the Key Class (formerly the Mr. and or Mrs. Class) of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he would present each Sunday the history of a hymn that was sung that day.
Fred Zahn's life was about service. He served his country during World War II in the European Theater as a combat engineer. He served the others by his weekly making and delivering of home made popcorn to businesses and organizations throughout Oklahoma City. He served shut-ins by being a driver for Mobile Meals. Mr. Zahn was deeply involved in the work of Alcoholics Anonymous, and contributed much of his time and energy to supporting the goals of sobriety.

Fred Zahn was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Paul, his wife Betty Anthony Zahn to whom he was married from 1938 to 1983. He is survived by his wife Rosie Zahn to whom he has been married for sixteen years. He is survived by four children: Tony Zahn and his wife Maggie of Oklahoma City, Larry Zahn and his wife Connie of Riverside, California, Richard Zahn and his wife Linda of Oklahoma City, and Betsy Thorpe and her husband Bob Thorpe of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren: Kathy Cavanaugh, Heidi Adair, Jennifer Zahn, Stephen Zahn, Brian Zahn, Emily Braly, Lisa Banks, Tom Thorpe, David Thorpe, Anthony Zahn, Will Zahn, Patrick Zahn, and Diana Zahn; thirteen great grandchildren; step children Tami U'Ren and her husband Gary, Bob Venable and his wife Brenda; step grand children Amy Huddleston, Tatum Fick and Ashley Kiselicka and one step great grandson.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, Dec. 18, 2006 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The family would like to express their thanks to Ross Health Care and Angie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, The Western Club or the charity of choice.
