Joseph is the son of Grover Benjamin Joseph Coffman and Violet E.Williams.

Joseph father died suddenly of T.B. when Joseph was nine years old.
He moved with his mother,older sister France Mae and brother Jim from Los Angeles,Ca.
to Owensboro,Kentucky to live with his mother's sister Viola (Williams) Sands and Ruby Ray Sands.
Joseph's mother Violet married Floyd McManama abt.1932 and returned back to live in Los Angeles ,California.

Joseph married Ruby Virginia Hughes on Sept.26,1941 in Los angeles,CA.,at the home of his sister Frances Mae (Coffman) and her husband Winfield Scaritt.

Joseph was aboard the Navy Ship USS Okaloosa in World War 11,that rode into battle at Okinawa on April 26,1945( Only the Bell of the ship remains and was put in a place of honor outside its new home at Northwest Florida Regional Airport).During that time Joseph and his brother Jim Coffman who was also serving in the Navy had at the same time arrived in Pearl Harbor and so they had each other as companions,and now together again they sail the vast Eternal Sea.

Joseph and Ruby had four children together and divorced in April 1969,
after the untimely death of their seventeen year old son Randall Lynn Coffman
b.25 Nov 1950,d.03 Mar 1968.
