U.S. Congressman. He moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, with his brothers in 1882 and formed the McCandless Brothers firm, which engaged in oil drilling and mining to construct artesian wells. They also engaged in cattle ranching in 1887. Entering politics, he served in the legislature of the Republic of Hawaii as a representative, (1898 to 1900) and in the legislature of the Territory of Hawaii as a Senator, (1902 to 1906). In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat from the Territory of Hawaii, to the Seventy-third Congress, serving until 1935. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his former business pursuits and in the operation of his large plantation until his death.
