U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852, and commenced practicing law in Asheville, North Carolina. He was the prosecuting attorney of Buncombe, North Carolina, and a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons (1860 to 1861). During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in the Confederate Army and solicitor of the eighth judicial district of North Carolina, (1861 to 1865). After the war, he served as a North Carolina State Superior Court Judge, (1866 to 1867) and practiced law. In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1879. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he practiced law and served as Chief Justice of the North Carolina State Supreme Court from 1883 until his death.
