Unsolved Murder Victim.

Donna was born in Owen Sound, Canada, the daughter of Jack and Joan Stearne. She was a 12th grade student at Downsview Secondary School in Toronto. She loved animals, and wanted to become a veterinarian. She was looking forward to getting the summer job she had applied for as a counsellor at a children's summer camp operated by the Peoples Church where she'd been baptized and sang in the church choir. She also loved to paint, and was working on a picture of a bridge at dusk which was going to be a gift for her mother. She'd been close friends with Wendy Tedford for four years, and on Thursday, April 26, 1973, the two decided to go shopping at Yorkdale Mall. Donna left home about 7:00 p.m. and arrived at Wendy's apartment about 7:30 p.m. The two left the apartment shortly after. They traveled by public transit bus to the mall where they spent a couple of hours. Then they left and travelled by bus to the area of Keele Street north of Wilson Avenue. They were last seen in the "Sit n' Eat" Restaurant at about 10:45 p.m., ordering cokes. They didn't stay long, and no one remembers seeing them leave shortly after 11:00 p.m. Sometime later, the girls were both shot and killed. They were found the next morning in a vacant lot. There are no leads in the case and it remains unsolved. She is survived by her parents; her older brother, John Stearne; and two younger sisters, Alanna and Janine. A funeral service for the girls was held on Tuesday, May 1st, 1973, at the Peoples Church on Sheppard Avenue, North York. Reverend Elmer S. McVety estimated early 1,000 people attended the service.
