================
Captain DeHart was captured at Sabine Crossroads, lA., on April 8, 1864 along with about 80 Soldiers from his regiment. They prisoners were conveyed to Camp Ford, near Tyler, Texas, then most of the 46th Indiana POWs were transferred to Camp Groce, near Hempstead, Texas, in August 1864 in a group of about 506 POWs.
They suffered greatly at Camp Groce, and many escape attempts were made with few successes. Over 100 POWs from DeHart's group died at Camp Groce or are still missing.
When the Army POWs were paroled at Camp Groce in December 1864, DeHart attested to the paroles of the POWs by signing each of them. He was the senior Army POW present since his commanding officer, Lt. Col. Aaron M. Flory, had successfully escaped in mid November 1864 from Camp Groce along with the senior US Navy POW, Capt. Benjamin Loring of the USS Wave.
