U.S. Congressman. While working as an editor of a newspaper, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in Franklin, Tennessee. Entering politics, he was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1831 to 1832). In 1835, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839. Not a candidate for re-nomination. He was again a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1843 to 1844) and served in the Tennessee State Senate (1845 to 1846). Retiring from politics, he practiced law, engaged in literary pursuits, and lectured until his death.
