Violet M. Harmon, age 81, of Edwardsville, formerly of Staunton, died at 11:40 a.m., on Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. She was born on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1929, in Livingston, the daughter of the late James Oliver and Edna Mae Reener Vallow. She married Henry S. Harmon on Nov. 15, 1952, in Livingston. He preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1987. Violet worked for Marshall-Fields in Chicago and later worked for the Draft Board in Edwardsville. After her marriage to Henry Harmon and later having had their children she continued to enjoy farm life while working for several years at Cruthis Store in Sorento. She moved briefly with her husband to Ellis Grove and was, for a period, a volunteer at the Pierre Menard Home in Ellis Grove. They moved back to their home in Sorento and after Henry passed she worked for Vallow Floor Covering in Edwardsville. She spent the last 12 1/2 years as a resident of Rosewood Nursing Home in Glen Carbon. She is survived by a son, Thomas Harmon Sr., and his wife Becky, of New Douglas; a daughter, Laura Lynn, and husband Alan, Schreckenberg of Granite City; four grandchildren, Angie Harmon, Thomas Harmon Jr., Katlynn Schreckenberg and Alisa Schreckenberg; great grandchildren, Dakota and Mallory Mollet; step grandchildren, Patrick, Emily and Melissa Cunningham and Jason Pirok; a brother, Richard Vallow, and his wife Vera of Edwardsville; sisters-in-law, Doris Vallow of Staunton and Zerma Harmon of Alhambra; and nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by brothers, Edward Vallow, Oliver J. Vallow, Harold D. Vallow and Robert L. Vallow; sisters-in-law, Beverly Vallow, Marie Harmon, Norma Lutz, and Delores Vallow; and brothers-in-law, Leroy, Cecil Harmon and Kenny Lutz.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Lesicko Funeral Home, 271 North Second St., in Livingston.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Dec. 23, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Douglas, with Rev. Mark Sidney officiating.
Interment will be at New Douglas Cemetery in New Douglas.
