Vergie Alice Justice was born in Centre Point (near Nashville), Howard County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Lafayette Lee and Rutha Sivley Justice. Her mother died in 1904 when she was only 4, leaving her father to care for and raise 6 children, Anna Pearl, Robert Lee, Gracie Ethel, Hattie Elizabeth, Vergie Alice and Clarence Homer.

Lafayette Lee and Robert Lee Justice left Arkansas before 1910 by covered wagon and rented a farm in Haskell, Tillman County, Oklahoma. They sent for Homer and the girls who traveled there by train.

On December 4, 1915 Vergie Alice married William Schuyler Overstreet in Chattanooga, Comanche County, Oklahoma. She was 15 and he was 17. Together they had 6 children: an infant who died within a few days of birth, Alice Ruth, Billie Sid, Juanita Frances, Peggy Jean and Betty Jo Overstreet.

Between 1940 and 1950 Vergie Alice divorced William Schuyler Overstreet. In 1950 she married Charles Alma Hoffman, a widower. He suffered a heart attack and died on 18 Aug 1965 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. Alice survived him by 23 years. She lived in her home until she suffered a stroke at the age of 89. She died several weeks later. Vergie Alice Justice Overstreet Hoffman was survived by her son, Billie Sid Overstreet and his wife Pat, of Texas, and her daughter, Peggy Jean Overstreet Packard of Oklahoma City, 15 grandchidren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
