Actress, Entertainer, Author. Born Elizabeth Lee Kirkland, the daughter of a West Point cadet. Her father fought with the South in the Civil War. She began acting at the age of 16 and worked with Charles Frohman and William Faversham for a number of years in musical comedy, making her debut in ‘The Private Secretary.’ She was a very popular comedienne and actress with the Madison Square Company from 1884 to 1885. Married to actor Donald MacLean Shepherd, they appeared on stage in a number of Shakespearean productions, including ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ A number of the most prominent critics in the country claimed that her ‘Juliet’ was the best they’d seen on stage. She also authored a book entitled ‘Boss [A Story of Virginia Life].’ She was prominent in music circles throughout Los Angeles. She was one of the organizers of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and was also chair of the women's committee of the Los Angeles Grand Opera Association.
