According to his military service records Hiram B. Scutt was born in New York in 1840. At the time of his enlistment September 16,1861, Scutt was listed as a teacher living in Dement, Ogle County, Ill. Scutt served with Battery G 2nd Illinois Light Artillery from September 16, 1861 until the battery was disbanded September 4, 1865, in Springfield, Ill. Following the war, Scutt moved to Joliet, Ill., where he began a career in barbed wire. In July 1889 Scutt and his family were vacationing in Lake Geneva, Wis. While there Scutt suffered a fall from his horse. He died a few days after the fall on July 29, 1889.
