In 1880, he was employed by H. MacArthur, as a ship broker and customs agent. From 1882-1885 he worked with his father as customs agent. In 1886, he was employed by J. W. Hall, auctioneer and commission agent and agent for the Globe Parcel Express. He was promoted to manager, and in 1904 he became successor to J. W. Hall.

He died in the Great Kantô Earthquake while helping to rescue his friend Dr. Wheeler.
