China Relief Expedition (Boxer Rebellion) Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a Hospital Apprentice in the United States Navy. His citation reads: For distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy in volunteering and carrying messages under fire at Peking, China, 12 July 1900. He was awarded the Medal July 19, 1901. He later became a Chief Pharmacist.
