Bishop Kenneth J. Povish was born in Alpena, Michigan attended St. Anne Elementary School there and graduated from Alpena High School He attended St. Joseph Seminary in Grand Rapids then earned a bachelor's degree from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. He also studied theology at the Catholic University Of America in Washington D.C. and earned a master's degree in education there. He began in 1950 as an assistant pastor at St. Ignatius in Rogers City then at St. Hyacinth in Bay City from there he moved to the pastor's job at St. Mary in Port Sanilac then St. Norbert in Munger and St. Stanislaus in Bay City. In 1970 he was named bishop of Crookston, Minnesota. five years later he returned to Michigan to be bishop of Lansing a job he held until 1995 when cancer forced him to retire.
