Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Entered the Civil War as Major of the 27th Mississippi Infantry regiment, eventually being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, then Colonel of the unit when it's original commander, Colonel Thomas Marshall Jones, resigned in March 1863. He led his troops in the Battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain. In the last battle a detatchment under his were cut of and captured in the intial Union assaults. Brought to Johnson's Island Prison in Ohio, he succumbed to the conditions there in February 1864.
