John Williford Henagan (1822-1865) - Find a Grave Memorial

Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Born in Marlboro County, South Carolina, his career before the war included being elected to the South Carolina Legislature and as Sheriff of Marlboro, South Carolina. He entered Confederate service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the 8th South Carolina Infantry on April 13, 1861 (the day after the firing on Fort Sumter), and was promoted to Colonel and commander of the regiment on May 14, 1862. He was wounded in action at the Battle of South Mountain, Maryland, and was captured by Union forces at the 3rd Battle of Winchester, Virginia on September 13, 1864. He was transferred to Johnson's Island Prison, Ohio, where he perished of disease in April 1865. His tombstone in the cemetery has his last name misspelled.
