James Allen attended public school in New Hope, He entered Medical School in Mobile Alabama & then Vanderbilt University, Nashville Tennessee, He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1895. He began practicing medicine the following year, traveling by horseback to visit his patients with medicines & surgical instruments in saddle bags. In the bags were Quinine, Calomel, Castor Oil and a medicinal compound called Peptolac, manufactured by a company in which Dr. Carpenter owned stock.

James Allen is listed on the 1900 census reports as one of three male boarders living in the home of Henry & Elizabeth Nichols & their daughter Nancy.

James Allen married Jimmie Obera Butler April 24,1901. Her father was a partner in Butler Brothers Store, a thriving business which allowed them to accumulate a lot of land.
With the inheritance she received and the inheritance James received from his father they became prosperous farm owners during the time James Allen was becomming an established, reputable physician. Eventually he was joined by his son Dr. James Lauler in the practice of medicine.
