William A. Tanner (1815-1892) at age 20 he came to Chicago and was a surveyor. He married Anna Makepeace of New York State in 1840. By this marriage three sons and seven daughters were born. The family moved to Aurora in 1852, opened a grocery store then a hardware store. He built a home at Cedar and Oak streets in 1856-57 for his large family, with a bedroom for each child. The family-owned the home until 1936 when it was donated to the Aurora Historical Society. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
