Pioneer Resident Claimed by Death Early Saturday
Mrs. Martha Ann Rodgers, 84, pioneer resident of Stephens County passed away at her residence, 6th and Harvey Street, at 2:30 Saturday morning after an illness of several months.
Mrs. Rodgers came to Stephens County in 1864 at the age of two years, settling first at Picketville. Her father having been killed in the Civil War.
The former Martha Ann Rhodes, she was born in Cook County. She attended school in the old Picketville community. For a time, she lived at Fort Griffin in Shackelford County during the time of the Indian rampage. She often told stories of the Indian peeping through the cracks of the logs
She and Mr. Rodgers had been married more than 62 years. Ten children were born to this union.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 at the Kiker Chapel, Rev. A.J. Morgan officiating. Interment will be in the East Side Cemetery.
Survived by her husband; three daughters - Mrs. J.R. Fannin of Abilene, Mrs. G.S. Cutbirth of Breckenridge, Mrs. Tom Murray of Corpus Christi; four sons - Oscar and Drew of Breckenridge, Arthur and Barney of Odessa; 37 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
