John Wesley Smith was born in Paducah, Ky., July 14, 1932. John left his earthly home for his heavenly home October 2, 2010.
He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and worked for Procter and Gamble in Memphis, Tennessee, for 38 and 1/2 years before retirement. Since his retirement, he had served in the ministry as Director of Lay Ministry and New Member Assimilation at Bellevue Baptist Church of Memphis and Sevier Heights Baptist of Knoxville, where he was a faithful member and persevering Prayer Warrior. He was also an ordained deacon. Before moving to Knoxville, John served as Director of Ministry Relations of Love Worth Finding Radio and Television Ministry of the late Dr. Adrian Rogers. John served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Smith; his sister, Mrs. Lucille Hotchkiss and brother-in-law Steve Hotchkiss; his sister, Virginia Goodloe and special brother-in-law, Malcolm Sloan.
He is survived by the love of his life, Joyce, his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, and two sons, Steve Smith and wife, Debbie, of Humble, Texas, and Carl Smith and wife Dana of Knoxville. He was the loving and dedicated granddaddy to six devoted grandchildren: Jonathan Smith and wife Danielle, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jennifer Smith of Austin, Texas, Joshua Smith of Humble, Texas, and Lesley and Alyson Smith of Knoxville. He is also survived by his sister, Emma Bourgois and husband George, and his brother, James Smith and wife Nell, all of Paducah, Kentucky.
Other survivors include his loving mother-in-law, Eura Van Atta, brother-in-law, Bobby Sloan and wife Nan, sister-in-law, Ann Sloan, all of Lebanon, Tenn., and a host of nieces, nephews, and loving and loyal friends. Special persons in his life to whom he had been a mentor, adopted daddy or grandpa were Pam and John Kopchak, Lynn and Joe Jeans, Cindy and Ray White, Sandra and James Queen, Kristin, Nick and Hailey Grace Roberts, Nick, Kelly, Abigail and Mayah Joy Kopchak, Brian and Tiffany White, Kim White, Clara Hurst, and Shawn and Mario Conway.
A Celebration of Life Service was held at Sevier Heights Baptist Church Monday, October 4, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. following visitation from 4:30 to 7:30. Dr. Hollie Miller, the Rev. Charlie McNutt and Greg Williams officiated. Entombment will be at Highland South Mausoleum this morning, October 5, 2010, at noon.
Pallbearers will be Joshua and Jonathan Smith, Steve and Carl Smith, Don Morris, Matt Powell, Howard Buehler and Craig Connatser. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Faith and Hope Bible Study Fellowship Class of Sevier Heights Baptist Church, Br. Shirley Townsend, Br. James Self, Dwayne and Ramona Frye, Bob and Jacque Norton, Marshall and Velda Powell, Paul and Minta Pickens, Kenny and Susan Rudd, Greg Williams, Neal Thornton and members of the Sevier Heights Prison Softball Ministry Team.
