Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a successful Monroe, Wisconsin, merchant when he joined the Union Army and was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in the 31st Wisconsin Infantry on August 28, 1862. on October 8, 1863, he was promoted Colonel in commander of the 31st Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry. As commander of the 31st Wisconsin, he led his corps in campaigns in Kentucky, Murfreesboro, Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee, siege of Atlanta and at the Battle of Averasboro, North Carolina. For his outstanding service to the Union, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 and was mustered out of service on June 20, 1865. After the war, he remained in the south as a dry goods merchant distributor and supplier.
