Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. During the Civil War he held various commissions, including Captain in the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Captain in the 17th United States Regular Infantry, Colonel and commander of the 7th Maine Volunteer Infantry, and Colonel and commander of the 176th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on June 3, 1865 for "faithful service". A career officer in the Regular Army, he retired with the rank of Colonel in 1895.
