HARVEY - Paul Edward Maynard, age 84, of 218 Silver Creek Road, Harvey, entered eternal life Thursday evening, July 28, 2011, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Born May 1, 1927, in Munising, a son of Rufus and Laura (Finch) Maynard, Paul was raised in Trenary and attended the Mathias Township School. He entered the US Navy on January 1, 1945, serving in Hawaii and East Africa, and was honorably discharged on February 18, 1948, with the rank of Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class. Returning home, he married the former Katheen (Kay) LaRue on June 11, 1949. Paul enrolled at Northern Michigan University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work and later pursued his Masters at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. The couple moved to Chelsea, Michigan where Paul was employed with the Department of Corrections as a counselor at the Cassidy Lake Technical School in Chelsea. In 1972, the family moved to Munising where Paul served as director of treatment at Camp Cusino while also administering operations at Camp Baraga and at Camp Ottawa in Marenisco. In 1975, the family moved to the Marquette area, where Paul served as Assistant Warden at the Marquette Branch Prison. He retired in 1984 after a long career in the field of criminal justice.

In retirement, Paul and Kay enjoyed winter trips to Arizona and Vegas visiting with family and friends. Paul was very much a family man and, in earlier days, he and Kay often took their children on camping outings. Known for his intellect and great sense of humor, Paul was also an avid sports fan, especially being an enthusiastic supporter of the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions. He loved history and was an avid reader of westerns and historical narratives. Paul was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey and Marquette Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #405.
