Triple funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Million-Taylor-Patton Funeral Home for James Clayton Stapleton, his wife, Gwendolyn Gaye, and their seven year old daughter Melissa Dawn, who died Saturday following an auto accident in Moberly.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Moberly.
A memorial has been at up at City Bank for the surviving members of the family; Ivan James Stapleton, who will be five years old July 26, and Stephen Turner, 11.
All five members of the family were in a car, driven by James Stapleton, enroute to Moberly Regional Medical Center, when he apparently lost control of the car. According to the police report, they were going to the hospital to get treatment for Mrs. Stapleton, who had suffered a cut arm in a home accident.
Mr. Stapleton and Melissa died at the scene and Mrs. Stapleton died at Moberly Regional Medical Center.
Burial will be in Chapel Grove Cemetery in Clark.
Rev. Tom McLaughlin, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, will officiate.
James Clayton Stapleton, 30, was born in Newport News, Virginia on November 4, 1963, a son of Richard Stapleton and Betty Greene Stapleton. He had lived in Moberly 12 years, coming from Salisbury. His last employment here was at Mid-Am.
Mr. Stapleton was a member of Immanuel Baptist church. He was a scoutmaster and a manager of a baseball team for Trinity United Methodist Church. He and Gwendolyn Gentry were married July 6, 1985, in Moberly.
Surviving are a son, Ivan James Stapleton, and a step-son, Steve Turner, of the home; his parents of Salisbury, three brothers, Scott Stapleton and Ricky Stapleton , both of Salisbury, and Chris Stapleton, Sarasota, FL; two sisters, Debbie Kendrick, Salisbury, and Abbie Stapleton, Sarasota, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Gwendolyn Gaye Stapleton, 32, was born in Moberly on September 7, 1961, to Garl Gentry and Peggy Gravitt Gentry. Mrs. Stapleton was a caseworker for the Division of Family Services in Randolph county. She formerly worked at City Bank in Moberly.
Mrs. Stapleton served as a den mother and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are her sons, Stephen Lawrence Turner and Ivan James Stapleton of the home; her father and step-mother, Garl and Margie Gentry, Moberly; mother and step-father, Peggy and Cecil Wells, Mexico; grandparents, Orville and Bonnie Gravitt, Moberly; three half-brothers, Paul wells, Centralia, and Terry Wells, Mexico; Gerald Lee Gentry, St. Louis; two aunts, Nina Bartee, state of Arkansas, and Karlean Gentry, Moberly; and Uncle, Paul Gentry, Moberly.
Melissa Dawn Stapleton was born December 13, 1986, in Moberly, a daughter of James C. and Gwendolyn Gentry Stapleton. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist church.
Melissa had completed the first grade at South Park School in Moberly. she played Pee Wee T-Ball for a South Park team and was involved in gymnastics and Brownies.
surviving are the brother, half-brother; grandparents, Garl and Margie Gentry and Cecil and Peggy Wells, and Richard and Betty Stapleton; great-grandparents, Orville and Bonnie Gravitt, Moberly; uncles and aunts, Paul Wells, Phillip Gravitt, Terry Wells, Debbie Kendrick, and Abbie Stapleton.
