Essayist, poet and literary critic. He was one of the initiators of ultraism. After the publication of the ultraists poems "Hélices" (1923), is definitely geared to the cultivation of literary essay, where he excelled as a commentator on the avant-garde aesthetic phenomenon. He was a regular contributor to the "Revista de Occidente", "Sur" and "Sol", and founder, along with Giménez Caballero, "La Gaceta Literaria" (1927) and with Peter Salinas he founded "Indice Literario" (1932). From 1956 he was professor at the University of Buenos Aires, where he settled. His most important volumes are "Literaturas Europeas de vanguardia (1925, reprinted and enlarged in 1965), "La aventura y el orden" (1943), "Problemática de la literatura" (1951), "Las metamorfosis de Proteo" (1956), "El fiel de la balanza" (1961) and "Tres conceptos de la literatura hispano-americana" (1963). He was married to painter Norah Borges, the sister of the celebrated writer Jorge Luis Borges.
