Samuel came to Albion Township with his wife Deborah (Whipple)(1819-1908) in 1838 and established their farm in what today is the 800 block of Irwin Avenue in Albion. He was the son of Peter V. Snyder (1785-1875)and Betsey Polly (___) Snyder (1793-1876). The Snyder family (originally Schneider) traces its roots back to Tinnen, Germany (by the Ems River near the Holland border), and came to America in 1746. They first settled in Oxbord, New Jersey, and moved to Dryden, NY in 1802. The Snyder's were faithful Methodists, and Samuel allowed their farmland to be used as the very first stop for the Underground Railroad in Albion. He and his wife were able to hide and care for the first five fugitive slaves that passed through Albion on their route to freedom in Canada. Other Snyder clan members also came to the area, and settled hundreds of acres of land in Albion and Homer townships in Calhoun County, Michigan.
