J. Ed Browning, 82, a well-known business and civic leader of Idaho Falls and one of the first car agency operators in the city died Wednesday afternoon. He had been taken to a local hospital Monday after becoming ill.

Mr. Browning came to Idaho Falls in 1916, opening an automobile agency which first sold the now-defunct Willys-Knight car. He operated his agency until his retirement 14 years ago.

During most of his business career Mr. Browning was associated with General Motors Co. The company honored him with a special award upon his retirement for his distinguished service in the automobile business.

Mr. Browning is remembered throughout East Idaho for the personalized service which was a characteristic trademark of his car agency throughout its long history here. He was elected to dealer leadership posts in both the state and nationally in the automobile industry.

A past president of the Idaho Falls Rotary Club and a former leader of the Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Browning was prominent in the city's "progress prescription" throughout his life.

A devoted service of his later years was his association with the Boise Children's Home, a non-profit child-caring and placement society, for which he served as director the past 10 years.

Mr. Browning spent his early years in Utah. He was a relative of the famous Browning gun dynasty of Ogden, Utah.

Mr. Browning was born July 17, 1888 at Ogden, Utah, the son of Jonathan Edmund and Mary Jones Browning. He attended schools at Ogden and Stanford University.

He was also an active member of the local Elks Lodge and was honored for his long association with the lodge several years ago.

He married Nina Birdsall Nov., 22, 1911 at Ogden, Utah. After their marriage they lived at Ogden until 1916 when they came to Idaho Falls. She died Aug. 26, 1957.

Browning, Idaho Falls; Mrs. Mevoln (Julia Mary) Locke, Woodland Hills, Calif., Mrs. Vincent (Nina Jane) Egbert, Bozeman, Mont., Mrs. R. E.
