Judith was born in 1712. On her father's side she was of French-Canadian ancestry. Her parents were Sir James Letart of Nova Scotia, Canada and Elizabeth Letart. It is said that her family had money. She became orphaned at a young age and was raised in the household of Peter White of Philadelphia. Her mother Elizabeth is buried at Christ Church in Philadelphia. She met Richard Somers and married him December 26, 1727 when she was only 14 years old (her first child John was born 10/14/1727). They had six sons and four daughters, including (information on children from "A History of the Somers Mansion" published 1942 by the ACHS):

1) John Somers (1727-1799), married Hannah Spicer Ludlum
2) Sarah Somers (1729-1783), married James Somers
3) Judith Somers (1731-Unknown), married Samuel Risley
4) Elizabeth Somers (1733-Unknown), married Mr. Paul?
5) Hannah Somers (1735/1736-Unknown), married Peter Andrews
6) Richard Somers (1737-1794), married Sophia Stillwell
7) James Somers (1739-Unknown)
8) Millicent Somers (1741-Unknown)
9) Joseph Somers (1743-Unknown)
10)Edmund Somers (1745-Unknown)

(Her grandson CAPT Richard Somers became a naval hero when he died in 1804 off the coast of Tripoli trying to blow up a Turkish gunboat. There is a monument to him at the U.S. Naval Academy.)
