Discrepancy with birthdate and first name:
I do know from his fathers bio and reading his book on the Indians, that he married Matilda Williamson 7 Jun 1843 in Greencastle, Putnam, Indiana which was the year he received an A.B. in 1842 and in A.M. in 1842, with a D.D.in 1864 from Asbury University which is now DePauw! Sanford was born in 1845 in Indiana, another interesting fact is just north of Greencastle, Ind. is Rockville, Indiana and the University of Indiana was located there , I found on the Asbury site where it said they had won out in 1840 over other Indiana Universities and named Rockville as one of them and yes it is in Parke co., Indiana.

After his marriage Henry Benson served the church as a missionary in Arkansas working with the Indians and mentions his wife Mrs B being with him, haven't finished the book so am not sure when he finished and left but was in Putnam, Indiana in 1850 as a pastor with wife and Sanford and dau ages 4 and 2. So is a guessing game, diffently born in Indiana, I found the info on Ancestry.com so is a coin toss your call!

(September 16, 1840, Greencastle, Ind. - This was a "gala day," reports George Manhart in DePauw Through the Years, as Indiana Asbury University graduated its first students. Three, to be precise. "First alphabetically was Thomas A. Goodwin, who had been the first out-of-town student to enroll in Asbury.")

Sanford is the correct name and that comes from family info passed down and also from family records.
