James Tate was a musician (Drummer) of Company E of The Twenty Third Pennsylvania Volunteers During The American Civil War. He was mustered into the unit on August 14, 1861. He served witht the 23rd Pa until he was mustered out on September 8, 1864. He reenlisted with the 2nd Conn. Light Artillery on November 8, 1864 and served the remainder of the war with them. He was discharged from the Army on June 16, 1865.
