Clark graduated from the "State University of Virginia," and was elected to the position of assistant professor of math there. He later was elected to a chair in math at Columbia College in Washington, DC. He resigned his position at the start of the Civil War, and served as a Sergeant in the Rock Bridge Artillery, a part of Stonewall Jackson's brigade. In the winter of 1862-1863 Clark transferred to the Engineers. The following summer, he was made a Captain of Artillery in Cheatham's Division in the Army of Tennessee. After the war, Clark returned to Columbia College for 6 years. In 1873 he was elected Professor of Math at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO, as well as Professor of French language. In 1880 he received an honorary doctorate from Baylor Univ. in Texas. In 1883, he was named Chairman of Faculty at William Jewell. On June 30, 1868 Clark married his second wife, Kate G. Morfit, daughter of Henry Morfit, a Baltimore lawyer.
