DR. LORENZO HOLCOMB ADAMS, retired Memphis plastic surgeon, died at home, Thursday, June 30th, following an extended illness. Dr. Adams both practiced and pioneered plastic surgery in the Memphis area for nearly 50 years. Dr. Adams, a 4th generation physician began his career assisting his father, Dr. Robert M. Adams of Ripley, MS, on house calls by horse and buggy. Dr. Adams received his undergraduate degree from the University of Mississippi. A 1940 graduate of University of Tennessee Medical School, Dr. Adams served as Medical Director of Tennessee Valley Authority in Oak Ridge from 1942-1946. Upon his return to Memphis, Dr. Adams completed his General Surgery residency at Methodist Hospital. Following his residency, he began a Plastic Surgery Preceptorship with his brother, Dr. Milton Adams. Together, they formed a renowned plastic surgery clinic pioneering many new and innovative techniques. Chief among these is the surgical correction of facial fractures along with aesthetic repair of the cleft lip. Dr. Adams maintainedhis special interests in cleft lip and palate repair throughout his career. "No one ever repaired a cleft lip better than Lorenzo ," says his nephew and fellow plastic surgeon, Dr. William Milton Adams Jr. "In fact, several Hollywood movie stars came to his clinic for reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. Following his brother's death, Lorenzo carried the mantle himself achieving both local and national acclaim." This tradition is echoed by Dr. Adams' son, Dr. Lou Adams, who practiced with his father until Dr. Adams retired. "Dad was never happier practicing his craft than when challenged with improving the facial defects of children at the Crippled Children's Clinic. He was truly an innovative champion for those kids," says his son.

Included among the honors bestowed on Dr. Adams is his election to the Presidency of Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He also served as Chief of Plastic Surgery Department for Methodist Hospital. Dr. Adams co-founded and served as director for both the Tennessee and Mississippi Crippled Children's Service-Plastic Surgery Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic.

As serious as he was about his profession, Lorenzo was equally devoted to his friends and the love of the outdoors. He spent many hours out in the fields and sloughs seeking his favorite sports of duck hunting and fishing. What he generally managed to accomplish however, was to have a good time, and especially make sure that all his fellow sportsman did likewise.

Dr. Adams is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou Wittenberg Adams along with his sons, Dr. Lou Adams, and wife Connie, and Michael Murry Adams, and wife Cathy, of Greenwood, Mississippi, and his daughter, Cynthia Adams Hughston, and her husband Judge Hal Hughston of Tuscumbia, Alabama. In addition, Dr. Adams was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren.

Services for Dr. Adams will be held at Idlewild Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 2, 2005, at 3 p.m. The family requests that all memorials be sent to Idlewild Presbyterian Church, The Church Health Center, or a charity of the donor's choice.
