Richardson Saunders was the oldest child of William Edwin Saunders and Maria Joanna Thompson, and the grandson of Richardson and Mary Saunders of Harbour Island and Green Turtle Cay. He began his service as a catechist under Archbishop Trew and as a student of the Reverend WK Duncombe of Harbour Island. He was ordained in 1856, and became rector of St. Anne's in 1862 after a stint in Abaco. When the parishes of St. Matthew's and St. Anne's were united in 1869, "Parson" Saunders became the incumbent rector of both. He served St. Matthew's and its members until his death in 1902. He was also Chaplain of the New Providence Asylum for thirty years, he sat on the Board of Education for six years, and he was a longstanding member of the St. Andrew's Society. He married twice - to Catherine Earl in 1867, and to Margaret Ellen Perpall in 1874. Four of his children survived him. His oldest son Richardson became Assistant to the Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins in the Roosevelt administration. His daughter Catherine Mary married Albert Edward Perpall and moved to New York, Robert Charles engaged in the real estate business in New York, and his youngest child, Margaret Louise Saunders, married George Morley in 1929 and they resided in Nassau.
