Clinton grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, MN, in 1942. Upon his graduation, he served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946. On October 17, 1945, he married Catherine Chambers in Bryan, TX. Following his discharge he attended the University of Minnesota and majored in business. He started working for his father while attending school with the Stacy Distributing Co. in Minneapolis until 1956.

Later, he was appointed Director of Dining Services at Moorhead State University in 1962, and served in that position until 1975.

Clinton married Erna (Mann) Bitterman on December 27, 1973, in Fargo, ND.

As part owner and general manager he reopened the Tree Top Restaurant in September of 1975. He served in that position until 1982. After a stint with trying to retire, he returned to the Tree Top as General Manager in 1987 and remained in that capacity until retirement in 1990.

In retirement he continued to be active, joining SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives). In addition to his counseling responsibilities, he also served as treasurer for SCORE for seven years.

Clinton was an avid golfer, a sport he loved not only for the competitive nature of the game, but also for the many wonderful friends that he met and played with. He won the North Dakota State Seniors Golf Tournament in 1973 in Minot. He had five holes-in-one to his credit.
