LeRoy "Pokey" Knight, age 92, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Harmony Living Center.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1918, in Madison, the son of George and Catherine (Kurt) Knight. LeRoy grew up and spent most of his life in Madison's Old Fourth Ward and East Madison. He received his education from St. Raphael's School and Central High School. LeRoy spent about a year and a half in the C.C's and forest service, first at Crivitz and a year on Isle Royal trapping moose and clearing fire debris. He was in the army in 1945 and 1946, stationed mostly at Fort Ord, Calif. His working life included almost 20 years with Fritz Construction and as a Dane County Deputy Sheriff from 1965 to 1978, retiring at age 60 with the rank of Detective.

LeRoy was married to Ruth Mary Knight, nicknamed "Bobbie," the mother of his two daughters, Constance June Karls and Sandra Lee Porter. Bobbie preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 1983. They had a wonderful marriage for 47 years. Leroy remarried in 1985 to Eleanor Pauline Spaeni, and lived many happy years with her in her home on Walter St.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; second wife, Eleanor; two sisters, Helen and Marcella; two brothers, George and Peter; and great-granddaughter, Shaina Davenport.

LeRoy is survived by his daughters, Sandy (Ron) Porter and Connie (George) Karls; grandchildren, Kathy Karls, Chris Karls, Georgia (Mike) Morgan, Barb Karls, Ron Porter Jr. and Deb (Joel) Ponti; and five great-grandchildren, Travis, Colton, Megan, Malissa and Alicia. He is also survived by Eleanor's children, Tim (Diana) Spaeni, John (Nancy) Spaeni, Carol Spaeni, Sandy (Clint) Vondall and Darlene (Al) Frazer.

Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2011, with Pastor Sandra Schieble presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens.
