Florida Governor, U.S. Congressman. He attended the College of William and Mary (1813-14), studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Loudoun County, Virginia. Entering politics, he was a member of the Virginia State Senate, in 1823. Relocating to Florida, he was appointed by President John Quincy Adams as secretary of the Territory of Florida. Following the resignation of Governor of George Walton in 1826, Mason as served as Governor of Florida, until 1827. Returning to Virginia, he again a member of the Virginia State Senate (1830-39). In 1840, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles F. Mercer, serving until 1841. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
