Henry Smith was born at Sans Souci, south of Sydney on February 24, 1917, the son of Richard Lacy Smith and Mary Ellen Smith of Kogarah, New South Wales. He was working as a loom turner and living at Blakehurst when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force at Sydney on May 24, 1941 and was allotted service number 411539. He served with 66 and 132 Squadrons, RAF before joining 453 Squadron, RAAF. Smith was a flight lieutenant when he was shot down by anti-aircraft fire on 11 June 1944 in Normandy five days after the D-Day landings. He crashed into the River Orne, near Caen, in northern France and the wreckage of his Spitfire and his remains were not found until November 2010. On Tuesday, 19 April 2011, Smith was buried with full military honours.
