Jean Landon Ashworth, 92, died at 9:25 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born June 12, 1918, in Carlinville, and was the daughter of Perry O. and Jean Hoblit Landon, now deceased.

She married Charles Henry Ashworth Sept. 1, 1940.

She graduated in 1935 from Carlinville High School, and received an associate's degree from Blackburn College in 1937. She received a bachelor's degree from Smith College in Massachusetts. She worked briefly in 1939 at the Carlinville Clinic.

She was an active volunteer, a Girl Scout leader for 40 years; an early organizer of the Red Cross swim program; hospital auxiliary; P.E.O. member for 70 years; Blackburn College Board of Trustees; mentor in the Link Program; member of the Federated Church, serving as deacon and on the board of trustees. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Carlinville Chamber of Commerce in 2009, and also received the Blackburn College Service to Humanity Award in 2009.

Survivors are sons and daughters-in-law, Richard L. and Olga F. Ashworth of Centennial, Colo., and James T. and Janie W. Ashworth of Carlinville; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two brothers, General Truman Landon and General Kurt Landon; a sister, Joie Russell; and daughters, Jo Ann Ashworth and Nancy Ashworth.

Visitation will be from 9 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Federated Church. The Rev. Jeff Johnson will officiate. The organist will be Eldon Wold.

Burial will be at Carlinville City Cemetery at a later date.
