Henry Philip Smolich, known by all as Hank, died peacefully at home with his family in attendance at age 95 in Burbank, California, on March 15, 2011. He is survived by his devoted sons, Paul H. Smolich and Thomas J. Smolich, and their respective spouses Terry and Camille, and four grandchildren, Lisa, Amanda, Matthew, and Kathryn. His loving wife of 30 years, Marjorie, died in 1970. He is also predeceased by his parents and his seven brothers and one sister. He also leaves behind his long-time companion and good friend Irene Wilk. He grew up in Aurora, Minnesota. Henry was a highly respected engineer for ARCO in Los Angeles for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He received his engineering degree from Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan, in 1938. He also served honorably with the United States Army from 1938 - 1975, earning several decorations while on active duty in the Pacific theater during World War II. He retired from the U.S. Army as Colonel in 1975.
Visitation will take place at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, on Sunday, March 20, from 1PM - 6PM, and funeral services will take place at the Old North Church, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, at 12 noon on Monday, March 21, followed by graveside services with a military honor guard, and a reception at Smoke House, 4420 Lakeside Drive Burbank, at 2PM. Remembrances suggested to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Henry was a great man, quiet and strong, and he is loved and remembered by all. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
