US Congressman. He graduated from Arkansas College at Batesville in 1896, taught school and with the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898, he served as a First Lieutenant in Company M, 2nd Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, US Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1900 and commenced to practice law in Batesville, Arkansas. He was prosecuting attorney of Independence County, (1902-06). In 1909, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-first Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until death. He had been reelected to the Seventy-first Congress and by special election his wife Pearl Peden Oldfield, filled the vacancy.
