U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Cane Hill Academy Arkansas, in 1850, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced to practice law in Clarksville, Arkansas. At the advent of the Civil War, he was a member of the Arkansas State House of Representatives when joined the Confederate Army and served as a Colonel in command of the 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment. After the war, he was prosecuting attorney of Johnson County Arkansas, (1865-66) and a member of the Arkansas State Senate, (1866-68). In 1877, he was elected as an Independent Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress, as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and served as judge of the circuit court, (1890-94).
