Royal Newton Clay was born in Georgia in 1838 to Royal Clay, Jr. and Mary Nancy Broughton Clay. His family moved to Itawamba County, MS before 1842. He married Eleanor Elizabeth Robinson before 1860. He served as a Private in Company H, 43 Mississippi Infantry (Confederate); military records show he participated in the "Siege of Vicksburg."

He was father of one son, John Wesley Clay; descended by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He and his family moved to Texas in the 1890s and he eventually settled at Itasca, Hill County, Texas.
