He served as a Private in Company H, 43 Mississippi Infantry (Confederate); military records show he participated in the "Siege of Vicksburg."
He was father of one son, John Wesley Clay; descended by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He and his family moved to Texas in the 1890s and he eventually settled at Itasca, Hill County, Texas.
