At the time of his enlistment, John was a farmer by trade and stood 6' 1" tall with light hair and gray eyes. He was drafted in Chambersburg on October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there on November 4 as a private with Co. A, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (a/k/a "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg. The name on his Civil War Record was Hendrix.

"John W. Hendricks Died Friday
Aged Man Passed Away at His Home Near McKain's Bridge

John W. Hendricks, for many years one of the prominent farmers of the community northwest of Brighton died last Friday evening at his home near McKain's bridge. Mr. Hendricks lacked only a few days of being 88 years old and had lived here for many years.

John W. Hendricks was born in Franklin Co., June 19, 1838, and died June 5 at the home northwest of Brighton, aged 87 years, 11 months and 11 days.

He was married to Isabelle Coffman and to this union were born three children, 2 girls who preceeded him in death some years ago and one son Wesley Hendricks of Brighton.

Mr. Hendricks was a Civil War Veteran having enlisted when 25 years of age at Gettysburg. He was honorably discharged at Gettysburg July 28, 1863.

He leaves to mourn his wife Isabella Hendricks. the son Wesley and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Bethel church by C. L. Bennett, pastor of Rubio Friends Church and his body was laid to rest in the Bethel cemeter".
