MELVIN R. DICKINSON SR.

Melvin R. Dickinson Sr., 85, of Stow Creek Township, died at home late Saturday evening, Feb. 16, 2008, after an extended illness.

The husband of Matilda "Tillie" (nee Harris) Dickinson, he was born in Stow Creek Township, and was lifelong resident of Stow Creek. He was the son of the late Clarence D. and Alice (nee Randolph) Dickinson.

A graduate of Bridgeton High School, in 1940, and after being recognized for his talents in agriculture, he began managing the family farm. He continued farming in Stow Creek, and was the president of M.R. Dickinson and Son farm until his retirement. Throughout his career, he received several awards. In 1958 he was awarded a trip to Phoenix, Ariz., and in 1990, the Dickinson family received the Century Award, for four generations of farming.

Melvin was a member of the NJ Farm Bureau, and a longtime member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, of Shiloh, where he was active over the years as the church treasurer, a trustee, and a Sabbath school teacher. In addition, he served as a member of the Stow Creek Township Board of Education for over 20 years, and was also actively involved in township activities. He also enjoyed hunting, bowling, and family and farm related vacations.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by two children, and their spouses, Melvin Randolph "Randy" Dickinson Jr. and Jeanne and Barbara Andrews and Joseph, all of Stow Creek; 6 grandchildren, Keith Dickinson, Lora (Dickinson) Sweeney and husband, Jarrett, Rebecca (Halter) Sibley and husband, Walter, Cynthia (Dickinson) Greene and husband, Carl, Jesse Halter and wife, Jenn, and Joanna (Halter) Bond and husband, Chris; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dickinson was preceded in death by his three siblings, Rev. C. Harmon Dickinson, Jeanett Nida, and Eleanor McAllister.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon Feb. 23, at 4 o'clock, at the Seventh Day Baptist Church, of Shiloh, East Ave., in Shiloh.

The church's pastor, Rev. Donald Chroniger will officiate.

The interment will be made at the church cemetery.

Friends will be received at the church Saturday afternoon from 3 until 4.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.
