Fr. Steuernagel, 63, Dies; Lancaster Pastor:

The Rev. George W. Steuernagel, 63, pastor of St. Mary's of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Lancaster, NY, died Wednesday, August 16, 1978 in St. Francis Hospital, in Buffalo NY.
Father Steuernagel suffered a stroke on Tuesday and shortly thereafter was admitted to the hospital in Buffalo.
Spiritual leader of the Lancaster parish for the last four years, he supervised the church sanctuary renovation in 1974 and restoration of the stained glass windows and church bells this year.
St. Mary's Parish celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1976.
Born in Buffalo, Fr. Steuernagel was a graduate of Canisius High School and Canisius College and completed his training for the priesthood at the Canisianum at Innsbruck, Austria, and at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary at Niagara University.
He was ordained to the priesthood in 1941 by the late Most Rev. John A. Duffy, former bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo. The ordination ceremony took place at the former St. Joseph's Cathedral at Delaware and West Utica.
Associate Pastor: Subsequently, Father was associate pastor of St. Mary's of the Cataract Church in Niagara Falls, and at St. Columba's, Blessed Trinity, St. Matthew's, St. Agnes and St. Joseph's Churches, all of Buffalo, and Our Lady Help of Christians Church of Cheektowaga.
In 1962 he was appointed pastor of St. Mary's Church of Silver Springs. He became pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church of Lake View in 1969 and pastor of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in 1974.
Fr. served as a pro-synodal judge of the Diocesan Tribunal since 1958.
Other Offices: Other diocesan offices he held included serving as divisional director of the Catholic Youth Organization, a confessor for women religious and editor of the Diocesan Ordo. The latter is an annual publication containing a list of offices and feasts of the church for each day of the year.
There are no immediate relatives. The body will lie in state from 2-5 and 7-9 today until Friday, in the St. Mary's Rectory.
The Most Rev. _____ (newspaper section missing) McLaughlin, auxiliary ________ of the Diocese of Buffalo, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 in St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, Lancaster. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna NY.
