Leona Cookenmaster, age 96 years, of Gladwin, formerly of Caro, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2007 in her apartment at The Brook in Gladwin following a short illness. She was born on December 23, 1910 in Goodland Township of Lapeer County to the late Edgar Charles and Gertrude Leona (Flansburg) Hunt. She and her family moved to Caro when she was 10 and she graduated from Caro High School in 1929.

Leona Hunt and Paul Cookenmaster were married on August 4, 1929 at Flint. In August of 2007 they celebrated 78 years of marriage. She had been employed in retail sales and doing alterations at J.C. Penney's for twenty-five years before retiring. Leona enjoyed her grandchildren, needlepoint, crewel embroidery, quilt making and reading. Leona was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, and had served as president of the United Methodist Women and the Caro American Legion Post #7 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Cookenmaster; and their four children who were born to this union, Gloria (Bill) Terbush of Caro, Richard (Joan) Cookenmaster of Gladwin, Lee (Helen) Cookenmaster of Prudenville and James (Sharon) Cookenmaster of Burton; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles E. Hunt of Caro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mayree Harms, and one great- grandson, Shawn Czizmadia.
