Military Medal recipient and veteran of two world wars. Knight was a clerk living at Balmain, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on November 21, 1916. He was posted as a Light Trench Mortar Battery reinforcement and allotted service number 1782. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT A67 Orsova on December 2 and disembarked at Plymouth, England on February 17, 1917. After training in England he embarked for France and was taken on strength of the 2nd Australian Infantry Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Australian Division on October 8 in Belgium. He was appointed lance corporal on August 1, 1918 and was commended for his courage and devotion to duty on September 16/17, 1918 at Hargicourt, France. He was a Number 1 Lewis Gunner in charge of a section. During the advance he showed splendid imitative in the use of his gun by charging enemy guns thereby allowing his platoon to advance. At all times he had shown good qualities and had inspired his gun crews with confidence. He was awarded the Military Medal. Knight embarked to return to Australia on September 25, 1919. During the Second World War he served from April 2, 1942 until March 23, 1944 with the part time 8th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps.
